Infrastructure development is a driving force of economic growth and an integral part of the development of Yogyakarta Special Region (YSR/DIY) Province. This is shown by the fact that more than 41 % of funds of direct expenditure related to the development of institutions infrastructures have been allocated to support this sector as one of the development priorities of the year 2008, for infrastructures are also believed to be the driving force of the regional development. Welfare disparity between regions can also be identified by the occuring infrastructure gaps beetwen them.

Improvement efforts and the development of physical infrastructure facilities, through reconstruction and public infrastructures improvement are continously done to encourage the region development and growth. Several efforts have been done through several policies, programs and activities as facilitating the reconstruction of settlements and its damaged environment, improving infrastructure services of roads, clean water, housing and transportation system, in accordance with minimum service standards, rebuilding the damaged infrastructures, with the priority of education, health, economic, and governance, as well as mitigation and natural disaster response.

Through the development and management of irrigation networks, swamps, and other irrigation networks, the increasing fulfillment of irrigation water needs for agriculture was done by rehabilitating the irrigation channels in Sleman, Bantul, Kulon Progo and Gunungkidul, building a pump and levee irrigation system network in Bantul, and conducting studies and planning of irrigation, conservation, as well as the development of the area of rivers and water reservoirs.

The length of province road in the YSR Province is 690.25 km. Up to the end of 2007 the percentage of the steady road was as much as 76.82 %, while the unsteady road was as much as 23.18 %. In the year 2008 the percentage of steady road raised to 80.84 %, while the unsteady decreased to 19.16 %. From the existing 216 bridges, 78.11 % are in good condition, while the rest are in the average condition and damaged condition. Efforts that have been done to improve the stability of road condition were through the strategy of routine and periodic maintenance of steady roads and through the improvement of road condition for the unsteady road.

The operation of Trans Jogja buses is intended to become one of the solutions of traffic jam in Yogyakarta. It is also expected that the Trans Jogja buses can be the new alternative of public transport with its buy the service system, which is expected to move the private transport users to exchange to public transport. Other objective is to reduce the number of old public transport with the age of more than 10 years. The number of Trans Jogja buses which are operated are as many as 54 buses, also functioned as replacements of 108 units of old public transport.

The form of the provision of electricity to rural areas is to provide electricity to areas that can be reached by the electrical network. While for areas with the far distance and isolated conditions, which can not be reached by the electrical network, the electricity provision is done by providing power, such as solar power (PLTS).

Infrastructure development is expected to increase several things as the accessibility of areas, social and economic infrastructures, region feasibility and posibility, and the harmonic rate of growth between regions. Therefore, special attention to areas that are still considered to be away behind, is required.
