INDUSTRY
In the year 2008 there were 76,267 units of business industries. The industry of Yogyakarta Special Region (YSR) Province is dominated by small and medium industries with the value of 99 %, while large industry is only with the value of 1 %. The contribution of industry to the economy of the region is however, quite large. This indicates that small and medium entreprises (SME) are resistant to the economic crisis that shock the world due to its flexibility and ability of anticipating changes. Industrial Sector in the Special Region of Yogyakarta has a significant role in employment. In the year 2008 it absorbed some 273,621 workers, or 3.50 % up compared to that in the year 2007 with the number of 264,368 absorbed-labor force. Value of the investment of the industrial sector is IDR 769,274,520,000 (equal to US$ 80 million) in the year 2008 or 4.00 % up compared to the value of the industrial sector investment in 2007 with the amount of IDR 739,687,038,700 (equal to US$ 75 million). This value of investment is a non-facilitated investment. While the investment up to the year 2008 in form of the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and the Domestic Direct Investment (DDI) recorded as many as 165 FDIs and 145 DDIs with total investment of IDR 4.5 trillion with the number of 34,713 Indonesian manpower and 127 foreign manpower.
Currently, the creative industries are also developed in Yogyakarta. The creative industries is centered on handicraft markets, crafts, design, fashion, computer services and software. Yogyakarta that has sufficient human capital is fit to develop major creative industries. The creative industries need to be developed in the YSR Province for these industries provide a significant economic contribution, create a positive business climate, build image and identity of the nation, based on the renewable human resources, create innovation and creativity as competitive advantages of a nation, and provide a positive social impact.
